Abstract
- A report by BGI Genomics has found that over 86 percent of Thai and Indonesian women are considering thalassemia screening after learning about the associated health risks. Thalassemia is a hereditary hemoglobinopathy that affects a significant portion of the Thai population, with patients requiring regular treatment such as blood transfusions and chelation therapy. The report surveyed 1,847 female respondents from six countries with high thalassemia prevalence, and found that Thai and Indonesian women have a higher likelihood of persuading their partners to seek genetic counseling and consider preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) if both partners are thalassemia carriers.
