Abstract

Researchers at Ohio State University have conducted a study on the use of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) nasal screens to rule out MRSA pneumonia in surgical intensive care units (ICUs). The study found that the MRSA polymerase chain reaction (PCR) has a high negative predictive value (NPV) for ruling out MRSA pneumonia in critically ill surgical patients. However, patients in the cardiothoracic/cardiovascular ICU (CVICU) and patients hospitalized for five or more days had a longer time to de-escalation of MRSA-targeted therapy, potentially due to a higher clinical risk profile. The study provides valuable insights into the use of MRSA nasal screens in ICU settings. [Extracted from the article]
