Abstract

UScellular and Cellcom have announced plans to shut down their 2G and 3G networks, following the lead of larger nationwide carriers. UScellular will be shutting down its 3G CDMA network on January 14, 2024, and has stated that 3G devices will lose service completely. The company is offering discounts on 4G/5G devices to help customers transition. UScellular CEO Laurent Therivel expects more customers to migrate in the coming months and believes shutting down the CDMA network will result in operational savings. The decision to shut down the aging networks is in line with other major carriers, who are reallocating resources to their 4G and 5G networks. UScellular is currently in the process of adding midband spectrum to its 5G network. [Extracted from the article]
