Abstract

French President Emmanuel Macron has renovated the Villers-Cotterêts castle and turned it into the Cité Internationale de la Langue Française, a museum dedicated to the French language. However, what was unexpected was Macron's involvement in the ongoing debate about making French more inclusive. Feminists have proposed changes to the language to accommodate women, such as using the word "ielles" for "they" and adding both masculine and feminine endings to gendered nouns. Macron, however, supports a bill to ban such changes, arguing that the masculine form is neutral. Critics argue that sexism is a societal issue, not a grammatical one, and that the language will naturally evolve to become more inclusive. [Extracted from the article]
