Abstract

A study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, assessed household knowledge and practices during a cholera epidemic. The study found that while most respondents were aware that cholera causes diarrhea and would seek care if suspecting cholera, only a small percentage were aware of the current outbreak in the area and would use oral rehydration salts (ORS) if ill. Additionally, fecal contamination was found in a significant number of water samples, highlighting the need for accessible, adequately chlorinated water supply and education on household water treatment and ORS use to prevent and treat cholera.
