Abstract

We present an Ir complex that extracts electrons from H<subscript>2</subscript> at room temperature and stores them as a H<subscript>2</subscript>-derived energy carrier (H<subscript>2</subscript>EC) at room temperature. Furthermore, we demonstrate that this complex reduces CO<subscript>2</subscript> to a metal–CO<subscript>2</subscript><superscript>2−</superscript> species at room temperature, and present the first electrospray ionisation mass spectrum for this compound.
