Abstract

A study conducted by the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont provides new insights into the utilization patterns and outcomes of iron chelation therapy (ICT) in elderly patients with low-risk myelodysplastic syndrome (LR-MDS). The study analyzed data from 2,564 LR-MDS patients and found that only 15.3% of eligible patients received ICT. Patients who received ICT had fewer transfusions, improved overall survival, lower risk of progression to acute myeloid leukemia, and fewer adverse cardiac outcomes. The study suggests that ICT may be beneficial for LR-MDS patients and further research is needed to understand its effects on molecular and clonal dynamics. [Extracted from the article]
