Abstract

This article discusses the need for a green industrial policy in the UK to address slow productivity growth and promote sustainability. The authors argue that a more active and strategic approach involving government and industry collaboration is necessary to generate investments that build economic security and resilience. They emphasize the importance of sustainable and productive investment, particularly in areas related to the transition to net zero greenhouse gas emissions. The article also highlights the economic justifications for green industrial policies, such as addressing market failures and capturing societal co-benefits. It suggests that targeted support should be provided to specific sectors and technologies where the UK has strengths, while also considering the distributional aspects and engaging citizens, consumers, and workers in the transition to a greener economy.
