Abstract

This article explores the potential benefits of using Linux as an alternative operating system for music production. It discusses the limitations of Windows and macOS, such as frequent updates and limited control over software and hardware choices. Linux, being a free and open-source operating system, offers more flexibility and customization options. The article provides an overview of Linux, including the Linux kernel, distributions, desktop environments, and package managers. It also discusses the increasing availability of Linux-compatible music production software and provides a step-by-step guide on how to install Ubuntu Studio, a Linux distro specifically designed for creative work. The article further delves into using Linux for music production, covering topics such as audio hardware support, audio servers, installing software, using Linux DAWs and apps, and different plugin formats. It mentions that while premium commercial music software may not be natively available on Linux, the Linux community has developed alternative options that are comparable in quality and cost-effective. The article concludes by providing instructions on configuring JACK, a software for audio connections, and using Carla, a plugin host. It also includes a roundup of Linux DAWs, instruments, and effects that are available for music production. [Extracted from the article]
