Abstract

The Acequia Madre House in Santa Fe, New Mexico, now home to the Women's International Study Center, was the residence of three remarkable women: Eva Scott Muse Fényes, Leonora Scott Muse Curtin, and Leonora Frances Curtin Paloheimo. The house contains collections and archives that document nearly 150 years of Santa Fe history, including records of their work in cultural conservation and their friendships with artists and writers. Eva Fényes began a portfolio of artists' self-portraits in 1870, which features drawings and clippings about the subjects. The portfolio includes works by notable artists such as James D. Smillie, Fred Kabotie, Olive Rush, Sheldon Parsons, Gerald Cassidy, Victor Higgins, Kenneth Chapman, and Paul Horgan. The article also mentions other wise women in northern New Mexico during the early 20th century, such as Mabel Dodge Lujan, Amelia and Martha White, and the School for Advanced Research.
