Abstract

The Canadian federal government is set to announce new regulations called the Electric Vehicle Availability Standard, which will require all new vehicles sold in Canada to be zero-emissions after 2035. This regulation aligns with the Liberal government's commitment to only allow plug-in hybrid, fully electric, or hydrogen vehicles to be sold at light-duty dealership lots after 2035. Currently, British Columbia and Quebec have provincial mandates for zero-emissions vehicle sales, and these provinces accounted for 71% of the ZEVs available for sale in Canada in 2021. However, the Canadian Automobile Dealers Association CEO, Tim Reuss, has expressed concerns about rising inventory levels and believes that the government should prioritize helping consumers afford, use, and charge electric vehicles before enforcing the mandate.
