Abstract

A study conducted at the Urology Department of Gujranwala Teaching Hospital in Pakistan aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of supine PCNL (percutaneous nephrolithotomy) as a treatment option for renal stones larger than 20mm. The study included 98 patients, and the majority of them presented with flank pain. The results showed a high stone-free rate and low complication rates, with complete stone clearance achieved in 67 cases and 31 patients becoming stone-free after extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL). The researchers concluded that PCNL is a preferred treatment option for larger renal stones, and further advancements in treatment modalities may help improve outcomes and reduce complications.
