Abstract

A recent study from the Department of Pharmacy in Guangdong, China, has examined the use of peptide drugs, such as insulin and calcitonin, delivered through the nasal mucous membrane. The study highlights the advantages and challenges of this delivery method, including the need to overcome low permeability and clearance effects. The researchers reviewed the achievements of 18 peptide drugs, focusing on their efficacy, mechanisms of absorption enhancement, and safety. They found that absorption enhancers, nanoparticles, and bio-adhesive systems were the most promising strategies. The study also identified new research directions, including spray freeze dried and self-emulsifying nano-systems. [Extracted from the article]
