Abstract

The article discusses the importance of water in Earth's processes and the need to understand the water cycle between the surface and the deep mantle. It focuses on the hydration of oceanic lithosphere, which occurs through fractures on the seafloor and along faults and pores. The article explains the two stages of hydration, the methods used to estimate the extent of hydration, and the distribution of water input rates in different tectonic settings. It concludes that subduction zones play a critical role in mantle hydration and emphasizes the importance of understanding the dual hydration of oceanic lithosphere for plate dynamics and the water cycle of Earth.
