Abstract

A recent report discusses research conducted at Federal University Minas Gerais in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, on the identification and confirmation of psychotropic substances in alcoholic beverages. The study aimed to address the issue of criminal practices involving spiked drinks that make individuals vulnerable to sexual assault. The researchers developed a dual analytical methodology using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and paper spray mass spectrometry (PS-MS) to identify these substances in drinks. The results demonstrate the potential of this methodology to be implemented in forensic laboratories and used as a tool for harm reduction at parties and festivals. [Extracted from the article]
