Abstract

Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679) was a prominent philosopher of the 17th century known for his materialist view of the world and his book Leviathan. Hobbes believed that the state of nature was a time of war and chaos, and argued for the necessity of a strong central government to maintain peace and order. While some may view him as a proto-capitalist, his views also foreshadowed the welfare state. Hobbes' work delves into politics, economics, theology, and philosophy, and continues to be influential today. [Extracted from the article]
