Abstract

Since the US Supreme Court overturned the right to an abortion, an estimated 65,000 pregnancies resulting from rape have occurred in states with near-total abortion bans. Very few, if any, of these pregnancies were terminated by a legal in-state abortion, even in states with exceptions for rape. The repeal of the landmark 1973 Roe v Wade ruling has allowed 14 states to outlaw nearly all abortions. Survivors of rape are particularly affected, as even in states with exceptions, there are few abortion providers and reporting to law enforcement is often required, which many survivors choose not to do. These findings are likely an underestimate, and previous research shows that people denied abortion are more likely to face negative consequences such as staying with abusive partners, living in poverty, and experiencing poorer mental and physical health.
