Abstract
- A New York jury has awarded writer E. Jean Carroll $18.3 million in compensatory damages and $65 million in punitive damages in her defamation case against former President Donald Trump. This is a significant increase from the initial $5.5 million awarded to Carroll last year. Trump's continued smearing of Carroll as a "whack job" and liar on social media and in speeches contributed to the jury's decision. Trump may be forced to sell some of his properties to pay Carroll and a separate fine in New York state, which could cost him up to $370 million. His wealth, estimated at $3 billion, is mostly tied up in real estate. Trump's legal and financial troubles are mounting, with 91 felony charges against him. [Extracted from the article]
