Abstract
- This article discusses the treatment options for blood blister-like aneurysms (BAs) of the internal carotid artery (ICA). The authors conducted a meta-analysis of studies comparing bypass versus non-bypass open microsurgical techniques and endovascular therapy for the treatment of ICA BAs. The results showed that bypass and non-bypass techniques had similar rates of complications and outcomes. However, when comparing microsurgical techniques to endovascular therapy, the latter had a higher rate of favorable functional outcomes. The authors note that more research is needed to compare specific variations in microsurgical techniques and to better understand how factors like aneurysmal angioarchitecture and patient comorbidities can guide treatment selection.
