Abstract

A recent meta-analysis conducted by researchers at ISPA - Instituto Universitario in Lisbon, Portugal, examined the impact of social presence on individuals' performance on the Stroop task. The study found that participants exhibited lower Stroop interference when performing the task in the presence of others compared to performing it in isolation. The strength of this effect varied depending on the type of social presence, with an attentive audience having a stronger effect compared to an inattentive or evaluative audience. The study also found that different features of the Stroop task itself, such as the version and trial structure, moderated the effect. Overall, these findings provide insights into the cognitive processes underlying social facilitation and how the presence of others affects performance on the Stroop task.
