Abstract

Scientists at the US National Ignition Facility have confirmed that a fusion reaction in 2022 reached a historic milestone by producing more energy than was put into it. Subsequent trials have produced even better results, giving hope that fusion reactors could one day provide clean and plentiful energy. Fusion, which involves squeezing smaller particles together into larger atoms, can create more energy without the radioactive waste associated with fission reactions. However, practical fusion reactors are still a long way off, and there are significant engineering challenges to overcome. While progress in fusion research is positive, it will likely be decades before commercial power plants are operational, and other low-carbon technologies should be utilized in the short term to address the climate crisis.
