Abstract

The B-17 Bomber Gas Station in Milwaukie, Oregon, was a popular roadside attraction for almost 70 years. The gas station owner, Art Lacey, purchased a mothballed B-17G bomber and installed it as a canopy over his gas station. The gas station closed in 1991, and the airplane began to deteriorate. However, Art Lacey's grandson, Jayson Scott, had a dream of restoring the airplane and making it airworthy. The B-17 Alliance Foundation was formed to raise funds for the restoration, and in 2014, the airplane was disassembled and brought to McNary Field/Salem Municipal Airport's Hangar C. The B-17 Alliance Restoration Hangar and Museum is now open to the public, where visitors can take a tour, learn about WWII, and observe volunteers working on the restoration. The restoration is estimated to cost at least $6 million and may take until around 2037 to complete. [Extracted from the article]
