Abstract

Tens of thousands of farmers in Europe have been protesting against poor economic conditions, including falling incomes, high costs, disruption from the war in Ukraine, and competition from cheap imports. Their discontent has been further fueled by the European Union's announcement of more stringent environmental policies for agriculture, which they believe will worsen their situation. The proposed green policies aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the farming sector, but many farmers feel that they are being asked to farm sustainably while also producing cheaply, which they find impossible. Some leaders are calling for the rules to be loosened in response to the protests, and several governments have announced aid packages for farmers in need. [Extracted from the article]
