Abstract

This article explores the significance of incorporating sensory experiences and physicality when studying the Renaissance arts. The authors argue that interdisciplinary collaboration among scholars can uncover gaps in historical understanding and offer fresh perspectives. The articles in this special issue focus on the concept of im/materiality in Renaissance arts, redefining the immaterial in positive terms and emphasizing the importance of materials. The authors also stress the need for historians to embrace uncertainty and change in their narratives, as well as consider their own encounters with the past. They advocate for a more sensory and experiential approach to research, highlighting the importance of sound, sight, touch, smell, and taste in comprehending historical art and music. The text introduces various contributions that explore these ideas within the context of Renaissance art and music. [Extracted from the article]
