Abstract

This article reports that till now, the Chinese reform movement has experienced too many cross-roads. It is opined that a nation's fate is often decided in a moment of choice. Any hesitation or indecision at that moment will cost the chance to change the nation. It is believed that true freedom of thought and speech is the inherent right of human beings and is sacred and inviolate. Pluralism is a necessary nutrient of normal growth. It is the duty of every person concerned about society, about the future of the nation, and about the fate of the country to see to it that truth is disseminated to all mankind, to construct a base for an independent and critical voice, a voice for profound thought, for a just conscience, and for fearlessly challenging established authority, to wave the flag for a new, great enlightenment movement, and to contribute one's courage and wisdom to the democratization of China. Reform needs boundless ardor, but even more it needs intelligent thought. China needs to think carefully about its past, present, and future.
