Abstract

The Biden Administration has implemented a program to selectively declassify classified information as a strategic tool to combat disinformation, overclassification, and public distrust. This approach has been used to address international issues, such as deterring Russian aggression in Ukraine. However, critics are concerned about the potential misuse of declassified information and the impact on public trust in the intelligence community. The proliferation of classified information poses challenges, and the National Security Council has developed a process to handle requests for declassification that align with strategic objectives. While declassified intelligence has been used to expose potential Chinese, Russian, Iranian, and North Korean involvement in conflicts, there are calls for transparency, oversight, and the prevention of politicization and weaponization of intelligence to rebuild public trust.
