Abstract

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) has the potential to transform technology and sustainability, propelling the global economy towards prosperity. However, there are concerns about the environmental impact of AI due to the energy and data center resources required. Data center energy use and emissions are being addressed by the industry, with a focus on sustainable operations. While AI requires significant compute power, it currently represents a small fraction of global energy consumption, but this is expected to change as more companies embrace AI. To offset the environmental impact, data center operators should prioritize energy-efficient servers, renewable energy, right-sizing compute requirements, and responsible retirement of inefficient hardware. AI can also be used to address environmental challenges such as climate change, pollution, and deforestation. Dell Technologies is committed to sustainability and believes that AI can support environmental stewardship while driving digital transformation. [Extracted from the article]
