Abstract

The Am N<subscript>4,5</subscript> (4d<subscript>3/2</subscript> and 4d<subscript>5/2</subscript>) and Am O<subscript>4,5</subscript> (5d<subscript>3/2</subscript> and 5d<subscript>5/2</subscript>) x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) of americium sesquioxide (Am<subscript>2</subscript>O<subscript>3</subscript>) and americium dioxide (AmO<subscript>2</subscript>) has been evaluated with FEFF, a Green's function–based, multiple scattering code. Taking guidance from the intermediate coupling model (ICM), applicable to local and nonmagnetized samples, it is possible to completely reconstruct the experimental results for the N<subscript>4,5</subscript> spectra, including the observed differences between the Am<subscript>2</subscript>O<subscript>3</subscript> and the AmO<subscript>2</subscript> cases. Although complicated by a more asymmetric line shape and difficult background variations, the FEFF analysis confirms the absence of core hole angular momentum coupling in Am O<subscript>4,5</subscript> spectroscopy.
