Abstract

Peter Dutton, the Opposition Leader in Australia, is overseeing the development of a plan for the country to use nuclear power in its energy transition. This policy is based on the premise that nuclear power is necessary for Australia to reach net zero emissions by 2050. Recent polls show that Australians' attitudes towards nuclear power are becoming more favorable, with 55% approving of building small modular nuclear reactors on the sites of retired coal-fired power stations. However, experts argue that nuclear power would not be cost-effective in the near future. Dutton's reshuffling of his frontbench team is seen as an attempt to bridge the gap between the resistance to wind farms and transmission lines in regional areas and the commitment to the 2050 emissions target by moderate Liberals. The Labor party remains firmly opposed to the nuclear option. Despite the controversy surrounding the nuclear proposal, Dutton has avoided making any disruptive changes to his team.
