Abstract

A recent report from the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic highlights the importance of considering the psychological harm suffered by combatants in discussions of the ethics of war. The research argues that the principle of proportionality, which evaluates the balance of goods and bads in war, should include the psychological stresses and traumas associated with combat. The paper emphasizes the negative impact that killing has on a combatant's mental well-being and suggests that these factors must be factored into considerations of proportionality. The research concludes that this element is often overlooked in discussions of the ethics of war. [Extracted from the article]
