Abstract

A study conducted at RG Kar Medical College in West Bengal, India, focused on the impact of beta thalassemia on pubertal development in girls and the effectiveness of chelation therapy in treating the condition. Beta thalassemia is a hereditary disorder that affects endocrine function during puberty due to the excessive deposition of iron in vital organs. The study involved 300 diagnosed cases of beta thalassemia major in girls aged 13 to 17 years. Results showed that pubertal development failure is common in girls with beta thalassemia, but adequate chelation therapy led to positive outcomes in terms of hormone levels.
