Abstract

A recent report from Columbia University discusses the application of an Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) Cascade of Care in a large public health system. The OUD Cascade of Care is a framework that helps health systems track patient health milestones and identify areas for intervention. The study found that out of 33,616 individuals diagnosed with OUD, only 10.7% initiated medication-based treatment in an outpatient setting, 6.7% had timely follow-up, and 3.5% were retained for a minimum of 6 months. The research suggests that tailoring the OUD Cascade of Care to local systems and focusing on early stages can improve substance use-related outcomes. [Extracted from the article]
