Abstract

R<superscript>2+</superscript> (R = Ca, Ba) and B<subscript>2</subscript>O<subscript>3</subscript>-modified waste soda-lime glass's immobilization of Cs is investigated using product consistency tests. The introduction of Ca<superscript>2+</superscript> and Ba<superscript>2+</superscript> to waste glass can inhibit the diffusion motion of Cs<superscript>+</superscript> in glass network, and thus reducing the leaching concentration of Cs<superscript>+</superscript>. The excessive addition of Ca<superscript>2+</superscript> to waste glass produced the crystallization of CaSiO<subscript>3</subscript> and Ca(Si<subscript>2</subscript>O<subscript>7</subscript>)B<subscript>2</subscript>O phases and worsened the ability to immobilize Cs. When B<subscript>2</subscript>O<subscript>3</subscript> exists as [BO<subscript>4</subscript>] units in glass, the normalized leaching concentration of Cs<superscript>+</superscript> is decreased, the existence of [BO<subscript>3</subscript>] units in glass can diminish its ability to immobilize Cs.
