Abstract

This article discusses the existence of two Indiana towns named Salem that were home to note-issuing free banks, causing confusion. The Bank of Salem in Washington County had a branch in New Albany, while The Salem Bank in Goshen had a branch in Salem (now Wakarusa). Both banks were conservatively managed and survived the Civil War. The Salem Bank is still in operation today as part of KeyBank. [Extracted from the article]
