Abstract

In the present study, we explored the relationship between cybervictimization and suicidal ideation by investigating the potential mediating role of core self-evaluation as well as the moderating role of perceived social support. A total of 1204 Chinese adolescents (M<subscript>age</subscript> = 14.50 years, SD<subscript>age</subscript> = 1.59, 653 girls and 551 boys) were invited to complete a survey about cybervictimization, perceived social support, core self-evaluation, suicidal ideation and demographic variables. We found that cybervictimization was positively associated with suicidal ideation. Additionally, core self-evaluation partially mediated the association between cybervictimization and suicidal ideation, while perceived social support moderated the first stage of the mediation process. The present study helps us to better understand the underlying mechanism through which cybervictimization increases the risk of suicidal ideation. It also provides a new perspective on how to help those with suicidal ideation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
