Abstract

Hayim Jeshurun Katsman, a brilliant academic, intellectual, educator, musician, mechanic, gardener, and peace activist, was tragically murdered in 2023. He was an expert in the study of religious Zionism, the extreme right, and the ultra-Orthodox movement in Israel. His research focused on the tension between religion and modernity within the religious Zionist sector, and he highlighted the heterogeneity of the movement. Katsman was actively involved in academia, teaching courses on politics, society, and culture, and he also engaged in political activism and shared his passion for music. Despite his left-wing alignment, he earned widespread respect for his nuanced perspective and deep understanding of religious Zionism. Hayim embodied principles of humanism and liberalism and ultimately sacrificed himself while shielding others during a terrorist attack. [Extracted from the article]
