Abstract

Researchers from Xiamen University in China have developed a potential vaccine for Klebsiella pneumoniae, a drug-resistant pathogen that causes acute pneumonia and is a leading cause of hospital-acquired infections. The vaccine, called hybrid membrane vesicles (HMVs), consists of outer membrane vesicles of Klebsiella pneumoniae and cell membrane vesicles of alveolar macrophages. In mouse models, the HMVs provided significant protection, reduced the number of colonies in deep tissues, improved survival, and reduced symptoms of acute inflammation. This research demonstrates the potential of HMVs as an effective platform for activating bacteria-specific immunity and protecting against nosocomial pneumonia caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae.
