Abstract

A recent case report from New York University NYU Langone Health discusses the cardiotoxic effects of sodium azide, a substance that inhibits complex IV in the electron transport chain, blocking ATP synthesis. Sodium azide exposure is rare but can be lethal, and there is currently no known antidote. The case report describes a 31-year-old patient with major depressive disorder who experienced altered mental status after ingesting an unknown amount of sodium azide. The patient developed pleuritic chest pain and was diagnosed with sodium azide-induced myopericarditis. Treatment with colchicine resulted in complete symptom resolution. This is the first reported case of sodium azide-induced myopericarditis with a preserved left ventricular ejection fraction treated with colchicine. [Extracted from the article]
