Abstract

The 2023 Orthodontic Practice Survey reveals a slight decline in production and staffing challenges in orthodontic practices. However, there is optimism among respondents. The average production per orthodontist has decreased by 4.7% from 2022 to 2023, possibly due to a decrease in patient spending on orthodontic treatment. Orthodontic practices should pay attention to this data and implement necessary systems and strategies to prevent negative production trends. Overhead control, new patient starts, and referral marketing are emphasized as important factors for success. Referring doctors are the primary source of new patients, generating at least $3.6 billion in revenue per year. Challenges faced by orthodontists include insufficient new patient starts, rising overhead, and difficulties in retaining or hiring clinical staff. The adoption of remote monitoring and teledentistry is increasing, with 38% of orthodontists reporting its use. Overall, the survey indicates positive trends in the orthodontic practice market.
