Abstract

A new study conducted by researchers at Public Assistance - Paris Hospitals (AP-HP) has provided a detailed analysis of liver involvement in systemic mastocytosis (SM), a condition characterized by the accumulation of atypical mast cells in organs. The study aimed to accurately classify the histological features associated with liver SM using updated tools. The researchers found that liver biopsies frequently showed slight sinusoid dilatation and fibrosis, but no cirrhosis. They also observed that a high mast cell burden was correlated with elevated blood alkaline phosphatase levels, and the presence of portal hypertension was associated with a higher mean fibrosis grade. Additionally, the presence of nodular regenerative hyperplasia (NRH) was linked to decreased overall survival in advanced SM cases. The study concludes that assessing liver histology can aid in the prognostic evaluation of SM. [Extracted from the article]
