Abstract

A recent study conducted by Northwestern University explored the effect of achalasia treatment on esophageal dilatation and the impact of esophageal width reduction on clinical outcomes. The study included patients with type I or type II achalasia who underwent various tests before and after treatment. The results showed that esophageal width decreased after treatment, and patients with greater esophageal width recoil had better treatment outcomes. This suggests that the mechanical properties of the esophageal wall play a role in the effectiveness of achalasia treatment. The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Public Health Service. [Extracted from the article]
