Abstract

This commentary responds to a study on the relationship between diet, cardiovascular disease, and mortality in 80 countries. The authors appreciate the study's findings that a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, fish, and dairy is associated with better health outcomes. However, they express concern about the omission of harmful components like trans fat, high sodium, and sugary beverages in the dietary score. They also disagree with the implication that high intakes of red meat and dairy foods have no adverse health consequences, as there is considerable evidence suggesting otherwise. The authors argue that the Planetary Health Diet, which they believe is misrepresented in the study, provides a more balanced and flexible dietary pattern. They also highlight the importance of considering the environmental impact of dietary choices, as they contribute to greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental footprints.
