Abstract

Recent studies have shown promising results in the development of exercise and calorie-restriction mimetics, which are experimental drugs that mimic the effects of exercise and calorie reduction without the need for physical activity or dietary changes. These drugs have been shown to improve body fat levels, blood lipids, muscle power, blood sugar regulation, and heart function in mice. While not yet available for human use, several mimetics have entered human trials with encouraging results. These drugs have the potential to prevent and treat conditions such as muscle loss, diabetes, heart failure, and neurodegenerative disorders. Mimetics may also help with weight management and muscle preservation. CR mimetics aim to extend healthspan by activating health-promoting genes, while exercise mimetics affect mitochondria to encourage the growth of more mitochondria and the burning of fatty acids for fuel. The development of these drugs is still ongoing, and there are concerns about potential misuse and side effects. However, researchers believe that mimetics could provide significant benefits in terms of healthspan and lifespan, especially for individuals who struggle with exercise and dieting.
