Abstract

Chagas disease, caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, is typically transmitted through vectors such as triatomine bugs. However, there is an increasing recognition of the oral transmission of the disease through contaminated food and beverages. This route of transmission can be highly lethal, particularly in pediatric and adult populations. The oral transmission of Chagas disease is already a leading cause of acute cases in the Amazon basin and has been reported in several countries in Latin America. There is also concern that cases may be going undetected in Mexico and Central America. In the United States, there is limited knowledge about the prevalence and routes of infection, and more research is needed. The symptoms of oral Chagas disease can be severe and include fever, cardiac abnormalities, facial edema, and other systemic symptoms. Prompt treatment with antiparasitic drugs is crucial for a successful recovery. [Extracted from the article]
