Abstract

A new report from investigators at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania provides fresh data on the treatment of acute diverticulitis. The study compared two surgical procedures, primary anastomosis with diverting loop ileostomy and Hartmann's procedure, and examined ostomy closure rates, readmission outcomes, and complications. The research found that primary anastomosis was associated with higher rates of ostomy closure and shorter time-to-closure, as well as increased unplanned readmissions but fewer complications upon stoma closure. The study supports current national guidelines that recommend primary anastomosis for appropriate cases of acute diverticulitis requiring surgery. [Extracted from the article]
