Abstract
- A recent study conducted by researchers at the Institute of Marine Research in Mar del Plata, Argentina, aimed to understand the feeding ecology of the broadnose sevengill shark in Patagonia. The sevengill shark is classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN, and its population in the Southwest Atlantic is declining. The study found that the primary prey item for the sevengill shark was the southern elephant seal, accounting for 70% of its diet during abundance peaks of both species in the marine protected area. However, stable isotope analysis indicated that teleosts were the main prey item overall, and the contribution of the elephant seal to the shark's diet was around 30%. The research highlights the importance of the marine protected area as a foraging ground for the sevengill shark and emphasizes the need for conservation strategies beyond coastal protection.
