Abstract

Designer Clara Ewart worked with architects Studio McLeod to add an extra floor to a townhouse, creating a triple-storey home for a family of six. The project involved reconfiguring the first floor to include a main bedroom suite, two children's bedrooms, and a family bathroom, as well as adding a second floor with two bedrooms, a bathroom, a playroom, a cloakroom, a side hall, and a utility room on the ground floor. The clients' main priorities were to have living spaces that flowed and connected, as well as sufficient storage for their collection of books. The design featured a calm selection of natural tones with splashes of bright color and pattern, reflecting the clients' taste. The most pleasing room to create was the timeless, bespoke oak kitchen, while the most important room to the homeowners was the main bathroom, which they wanted to feel like a room with a bath in it. The project involved a complete interior refit, allowing for the introduction of new fixtures and fittings. The advice for creating a successful decorating scheme is to strike a balance between the client's aesthetic preferences and the designer's design DNA. The townhouse is located in West London and features an expansive and eclectic art collection from HdM Gallery. Existing pieces of furniture were repurposed throughout the home, reflecting sentimental and eco-conscious perspectives.
