Abstract

A recent meta-analysis conducted by researchers at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine in Rochester, Michigan, examined the use of intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) during thyroid and parathyroid surgery to reduce the incidence of recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injuries. The analysis included 60 studies, including randomized and non-randomized trials, and found that IONM was associated with a lower risk of permanent RLN injuries compared to visual identification of the RLN. The researchers concluded that strong consideration should be given to using IONM during these surgeries. This information may be useful for individuals researching nerve injuries and nervous system diseases and conditions. [Extracted from the article]
