Abstract
- A study conducted at SMS Medical College and Hospitals in Jaipur, India, analyzed the causes of acute liver failure (ALF) and compared them to ALF mimics such as malaria and dengue fever. The study found that the most common cause of ALF was hepatitis A virus, followed by hepatitis B virus, while in ALF mimics, malaria was the most common cause, followed by dengue fever. Patients in the ALF mimics group had higher incidence of fever, hepatosplenomegaly, and anemia, while ALF patients had higher levels of transaminase, bilirubin, prothrombin time, serum ammonia, and mortality. The study concluded that a high index of suspicion and awareness is required to identify common infectious ALF mimics for early diagnosis. [Extracted from the article]
