Abstract
- A recent study conducted by the RAND Corporation explores the barriers and enablers to establishing an addiction-focused consultation team for hospitalized adults with opioid use disorder (OUD). The study found that hospitalization presents an opportunity to initiate medications for OUD and connect patients to care after discharge, but this is often not done. To address this gap, the study tested the effectiveness of a hospital-based addiction consultation team called the Substance Use Treatment and Recovery Team (START). The study conducted interviews with healthcare professionals at three study sites to understand potential barriers and enablers to implementing the team. The findings suggest that hospitals planning to implement similar teams should conduct a pre-implementation contextual assessment to address potential barriers and ensure the team fits within the unique hospital context.
